Wilderness First Aid: Emergency Care in Remote Locations

Who is this qualification for?

A Regulated qualification sitting at Level 3 on the national RQF framework is aimed at learners who are seeking a more advanced first aid training course within an outdoor context. This training will take the learner to the next level of first aid knowledge and skills and in to pre-hospital care for a casualty, while operating in remote and far from help remote locations in the UK. Such locations include the Scottish Highlands, the UK National Parks and similar areas. The training aligns to the IOL Band 4 Standards for those working and operating in complex terrain.

How long will it take?

Learners are required to complete 12 hours of on-line learning, underpinning the knowledge required prior to attending the full three days face to face training. Our courses are conducted in realistic conditions at our discreet mountain centre in the Brecon Beacons utilising hill, moorland, crags and rivers for your scenario based assessments.

Topics covered

The qualification covers knowledge such as the roles and responsibilities of the Initial Person on Scene, how to assess an incident and recognising signs and symptoms of injury and illness within the context of the Remote Areas Environment. The qualification includes more advanced skills in airway management, spinal immobilisation, casualty care for extended periods which includes observations and record keeping, communication with other services, emergency evacuation and extended care and much more.

Assessment method

This qualification is assessed by on-line assessment, practical demonstrations and a final multiple-choice theory test.


Those successfully completing this training will be awarded a TQUK Initial Person on Scene (RQF) certificate, that is valid for 3-years. You may view this accreditation on the national framework here.
