Emergency first aid for pharmacists
Community Pharmacists provide a key element across Great Britain’s NHS Primary care systems and at times are the first point of contact the public may require for minor aliments with a Primary care service provider without the need to see a GP or Doctor.
The General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) which is the Regulator across Great Britain on Pharmacy Owners, Pharmacists & Pharmacy Technicians and which regulates their activities, ensuring the public are kept safe.
The GPhC, acknowledges the fact that ”The public expects a pharmacist to be able to help if there is an accident or emergency near the pharmacy or in the pharmacy itself”. ‘‘It also expects a pharmacist to be an appropriate person to phone for advice in an emergency”.
Therefore GPhC, requires all new & existing Pharmacy registrants to meet a set of Standards and in the case of Emergency first aid this is listed under Standard C2, (Outcome C2.10).
The GPhC wants to make sure that all new pharmacists are ready for this role if they need to perform it. However, most employers have a policy of designating certain members of staff as first-aiders to handle all health emergency situations, and this may not be the pharmacist. Pharmacists can take professional indemnity insurance to cover for first aid activities.
Our CPD Certificated Emergency First Aid at Work for Pharmacist’s, covers the Immediately Life Threatening subjects & non-life threatening subjects as directed in Outcomes C2.10 of the application process.
These are:
- obstruction to airways
- CPR
- shock
- electric shock
- overdoses and poisoning
- a seizure
- hypoglycaemia or hyperglycaemia
- loss of consciousness
- severe bleeding
- burns and scalds
- head injuries and concussion
- severe pain in head, chest or abdomen
- allergic reactions
Pharmacy Registrants , should be able to deal with a range of first aid situations but are not usually life threatening should include, as a minimum:
- minor allergic reactions
- foreign bodies or chemicals in the eye
- mild shock
- minor burns and scalds
- injuries to bones, muscles, joints
- minor bleeding.
Remote First Aid is a recognised provider delivering specific Emergency first aid training for the Pharmacist & the Pharmacy Technician to meet their Professional Registration requirements at pre & post registration. Inline with the industry standards, certification issued is valid for three-years, contains years one and two annual refresher dates as part of the Professionals CPD process. At year three the registrant is required to complete the full Emergency first aid training again.
