Learner PPE in First Aid Training

Home » News » Learner PPE in First Aid Training

25 August 2025 by Pete Cook

Meeting Legal Duties Under the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974 and the First Aid Regulations 1981 & 1982

Ensuring safe, high‑quality first aid training, embedding Learner PPE use in First Aid Training is not just good practice—it is a legal and moral obligation. Under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 (HSWA) and the Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981 & 1982, training providers must protect learners from avoidable harm and ensure that all training environments reflect the same standards expected in real workplaces.

At Remote First Aid, learner safety, hygiene, and professionalism sit at the heart of every course. This includes the correct provision and use of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as first aid gloves, CPR face shields, and hand‑washing facilities—all essential components of safe first aid practice.

Legal Duties: What the Regulations Require

    1. Health & Safety at Work etc. Act 1974

The HSWA places a general duty on employers, training providers, and organisations to:

    • Protect the health, safety, and welfare of employees and learners
    • Provide safe systems of work
    • Ensure adequate information, instruction, training, and supervision
    • Prevent exposure to foreseeable risks

In a training environment, this includes preventing exposure to bodily fluids, cross‑contamination, and infection risks during practical first aid activities.

    2. First Aid Regulations 1981 & 1982

These regulations require employers and training providers to:

    • Provide appropriate first aid equipment
    • Ensure first aiders and learners have access to suitable PPE
    • Maintain hygienic conditions during training and assessment
    • Ensure equipment is clean, safe, and fit for purpose

For training providers, this extends to CPR manikins, replacement lungs, face shields, and cleaning protocols—all of which must meet recognised hygiene standards.

Why Learner PPE Matters: Moral and Legal Responsibility

First aid training involves close contact, shared equipment, and simulated emergency scenarios. Without proper PPE, learners may be exposed to:

    • Saliva and respiratory droplets during CPR practice
    • Contaminated surfaces
    • Blood or bodily fluid simulations
    • Infection risks from shared equipment

Providing PPE is therefore not optional—it is a legal requirement and a moral duty to safeguard learners, instructors, and the wider public. When Remote First Aid provides training, they provide learners with high‑quality Learner PPE in their first aid training classes.

Core PPE Requirements in First Aid Training

    1. First Aid Gloves

    Gloves are essential for:

    • Simulated wound management
    • Bleeding control
    • Handling training equipment
    • Reducing cross‑contamination

Remote First Aid provides single‑use, latex‑free gloves to ensure inclusivity and compliance with allergy‑safe standards.

    2. CPR Face Shields

    Face shields protect learners during:

    • Rescue breath practice
    • Demonstrations involving airway management
    • Shared manikin use

Using single‑use CPR face shields ensures that every learner can practise safely without risk of contamination.

    3. Hand Washing & Sanitisation

Under the HSWA and First Aid Regulations, training providers must ensure:

    • Access to hand‑washing facilities
    • Clear hygiene instructions before and after practical sessions

Remote First Aid integrates hand hygiene into every course, reinforcing best practice for real‑world emergencies.

Behind the Scenes: Cleaning, Maintenance, and Professional Standards

High‑quality training requires more than PPE—it demands rigorous cleaning and maintenance of equipment. Remote First Aid follows:

    • Industry‑standard manikin cleaning protocols
    • Disinfection between learners and between sessions
    • Regular replacement of lungs, valves, and face components
    • Deep cleaning cycles using industrial equipment
    • Training use log of equipment to record use, and the above periodic cleaning regimes

This ensures that every learner trains on equipment that is safe, hygienic, and professionally maintained.

    Embedding Safe Practice Into Learning

Remote First Aid teaches PPE use not as a tick‑box exercise, but as a core professional behaviour. Learners are trained to:

    • Assess risks before approaching a casualty
    • Don gloves correctly
    • Use face shields confidently
    • Maintain hand hygiene throughout
    • Dispose of PPE safely
    • Understand their legal responsibilities in the workplace

This approach ensures that learners leave not only competent, but also compliant and confident.

Conclusion: PPE Is a Legal Requirement and a Professional Standard

The combination of the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974 and the First Aid Regulations 1981 & 1982 makes it clear: training providers must protect learners through proper PPE, hygiene, and equipment maintenance.

Remote First Aid continues to lead the sector by embedding these legal duties into every course, ensuring that learners train safely, responsibly, and in line with the highest professional standards.
