Stronger Safer Wales: Confronting Wales’ Rising Accidental Death Crisis
Wales is facing a deepening public safety crisis, with accidental fatalities rising by 43% over the last decade. Today, more than 1,200 people lose their lives every year to preventable incidents — a fatality rate 22% higher than the UK average.

This isn’t a distant statistic. It’s happening in our communities, our workplaces, our homes.
Blaenau Gwent: One of the Highest Accidental Death Rates in the UK
Just over the border, Blaenau Gwent now records 67 accidental deaths per 100,000 people, placing it among the top three highest rates of any local authority in England and Wales.
These findings come from *RoSPA’s latest Annual Review of Accidents, which paints a stark picture:
- Wales: 44 accidental deaths per 100,000
- UK average: 34
- Scotland: 51 (highest)
- Northern Ireland: 39
- England: 32
“Accidents devastate lives in an instant.”
RoSPA’s chief executive, Becky Hickman, captures the human cost:
“Accidents devastate lives in an instant. They are often sudden, violent, and shocking… What makes this devastation even harder to bear is the knowledge that so many of these incidents are entirely preventable.”
Across the UK:
- 23,000 people die from accidents each year
- Nearly 900,000 hospital admissions result from accidental injury
- The NHS spends £6 billion annually on immediate treatment
- The wider economy loses another £6 billion in working days lost
This is not just a health issue — it’s a national resilience issue.
