It’s easy to assume we already know everything we need to teach first aid effectively. After all, first aid trainers are to be moderated annually and complete a three‑year cycle of teaching reviews as set in the GEIS3 document to demonstrate ongoing technical competence. However, once you gain your Regulated First Aid Trainer & Assessor qualification and begin delivering courses regularly, staying up‑to‑date with teaching techniques becomes more challenging.
Running courses takes time, energy and focus. As a result, many trainers find themselves drifting away from the “front line” of new teaching approaches, learner‑engagement strategies, and sector‑specific updates. This is a common challenge across the training industry.
Staying Connected With Your Sector
One of the most effective ways to stay current is to actively connect with other trainers. You can do this informally by picking up the phone for a chat, or more formally by attending trainer conferences and development events. Remote First Aid offers two‑day Trainer Knowledge & Teaching Skills events in March, June, September and December, giving trainers structured opportunities to refresh their skills.
These events help first aid trainers update and refine their teaching and assessing techniques within a friendly, peer‑supported environment. Each two‑day programme includes two nights of self‑catering accommodation, creating space for informal discussion, shared learning and professional networking, within remote outdoor settings in Bannau Brycheiniog and Eryri.
Training Venues Designed for Real Learning
- March & December events take place at our Merthyr Tydfil outdoor training centre.
- June & September events run at our Porthmadog outdoor centre.
Both venues offer fully equipped kitchens, dormitory‑style sleeping areas found at outdoor education centres, and well‑equipped indoor and outdoor teaching spaces — including covered outdoor areas ideal for scenario‑based peer reviews.
Structured Peer‑Led Development
During the two days, trainers work together to develop their teaching and assessing skills through peer‑led activities focused on first aid delivery. The Remote First Aid trainer development team supports this process by enabling participants to complete the HABC Award in Delivering Training (RQF).

- Principles of Good Training Practice Explore what constitutes high‑quality training, including structure, engagement, and learner‑centred approaches. (Peer led discussions)
- Planning and Structuring Training Sessions Reviewing your current practices on your design & delivery of sessions. (Peer & Centre Staff)

- Assessment and Self‑Evaluation Complete a practical assessment and reflective self‑evaluation to demonstrate competence and identify development areas. (Assessment method: Practical assessment and self‑evaluation)
